the saying refers to the mayflower.
The saying never cast a clout till may is out does it mean the month of may or the mayflower ?
It refers to the month.
It is still pretty nippy in Yorkshire in May and nobody has any business casting clouts or other warm underwear untill it warms up in June !!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:THIS CAN MEAN THE MONTH OF MAY OR THE MAY BLOSSOM OR HAWTHORNE TREE OR 'MAY' BUSH. THESE START TO BLOSSOM LEAFS IN APRIL, MEANING WARMER WEATHER IS COMING.
THE MONTH OF MAY IDEA COMES FROM SCOTLAND AND REFERS TO KEEPING PROPER CLOTHING ON UNTIL MAY COMES AND BRINGS WARMER WEATHER.
Reply:I thought it was stroke, not cast.
