Why was the mayflower compact on an important step toward democracy?
The Mayflower Compact was a significant step toward democracy because it emphasized the importance the people deciding how the government should work. Sort of a "power to the people" thing. It was also one of the first examples of written law. (funny, eh? Now that's a total social norm).

The Mayflower Compact was an agreement that stated that because the King of England was too far away to rule the New World, the people would govern themselves. The adult men (who were free) were given the power to be elected to government positions, while the women, children, and servants would not be allowed to rebel against the hierarchy of authority.
