What does "came on the mayflower" mean?

I don't really know what it means, I hope it isn't offending anyone that I put this up but I really would like to know...

What does "came on the mayflower" mean?
one of the first pilgrims to come over to america. if someone says that their family came on the mayflower they usually mean that their family has just been in the country for that many generations.
Reply:The Mayflower was the famous ship that transported the English Separatists, better known as the Pilgrims, from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth, Massachusetts

When someone says this, it usually means that they're telling you that they've been around along time.
